1983 Porsche 911SC Coupe

1983 Porsche 911SC-114k miles

Slate Blue Metallic…Color can radically alter how you emotionally respond to an object. This 911SC is finished in a rare color called Schieferblaumetallic that simply works magic with the shape of this 911. It’s a color that causes me to simply and quietly walk around the car and admire the simple elegance of the impact bumper 911. It doesn’t shout or scream in the way a brighter color might. Its that immaculately dressed woman with graying hair, who carries herself with unimaginable grace who simply fills the room… Timeless beauty…you know it when you see it…

This 911SC is a nice, dry example having been sold new at Bob Smith Porsche Audi in Hollywood, CA on July 13th 1983. All the subsequent owners were in sunny and dry California until the most recent owner brought it to Southern Oregon in 2010.  Here is how is was equipped new:

  • Slate Blue Metallic Paint (rare: only offered in 1983-1984)
  • Champagne/Black leather interior
  • 88amp/hr battery
  • 16” Forged Alloy wheels
  • Automatic Speed Control
  • Sport Shock absorbers (Bilstein)
  • Fog Lights
  • Electric Sliding roof

This particular 911SC is a very late build example having been built in May of 1983, which means it got every improvement of the SC era. The SC is regarded as the most reliable and simple of all the 911’s and being a late build means it’s the best of the breed.  A little known fact is that the late SC’s (post 4/1983) actually came with the stronger and improved 3.2 Carrera case and oiling system. These can be distinguished by the fact they have the single drain plug to the drivers side of the case vs. the previous sump plate and screen. They also came standard with the 160MPH speedo vs. the previous silly 85 mph one; they came at the same ride height as the ROW SC (no more US ride height!) and included the updated finned style oil cooler.

The best thing about this car is that its like your favorite pair of jeans, broken in and comfortable yet throw on a pair of dressier shoes and a sport jacket and you can hit the town. It wears its 33 years of love and care like a badge of honor, so if you are looking for a perfect car without flaw, this ISN’T the one for you. If you want a car to enjoy, drive and even (gasp) drive in any type of weather or condition, this IS your car!

Here is what is great about it:

  • 20+ years of service records showing love and care by well-respected Porsche independents.
  • Current on all service: recent oil change with Brad-Penn, new spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter and accumulator, new motor mounts, all 4 brake calipers rebuilt, 4 new rotors and pads, new front wheel bearings and more.
  • All the right updates for an SC: Carrera tensioners, J-West shifter update (shifts beautifully!), turbo tie rods, 4 new Bilstein shocks, back dated heat, cat bypass, 7” & 8” wheels and more.
  • Complete with all original books and VIN matched service book, original window sticker, 3 ring binder of service records, tool kit, original keys and even a period correct working Blaupunkt!
  • Clean Carfax and history
  • Just a clean, great running, honest, no excuses SC!

Now like I said above it’s like your favorite pair of jeans, broken in and comfortable. So here are the less than perfect items:

  • Paint- it has had paintwork here and there over the years and it has also seen 33 years and 114k miles of joy. With that comes chips and nicks on various panels. It looks great from 5 feet but up close you will see it. Nothing egregious, but certainly not a zero mile garage queen!
  • Interior- Overall the interior is very clean but at some point somebody recovered the original seats in Black as opposed to the original Champagne and also swapped in black door pockets. I think it looks fine as the other items in the interior are black, but it isn’t original. The dash does have two ~1-2” inch cracks forming.
  • Items I noted: Clock doesn’t work, passenger side heater flapper is not working, AC has been removed.

I was lucky enough to get to drive this car ~500 miles this week. This gave me a great opportunity to test the car out and make a punch list of to do items. Here is what I am having done this week:

  • 4 new Continental Extreme Contact tires (old tires are from 2005)
  • 4 wheel alignment and corner balance by the experts at Cantrell Motorsports.
  • New Passenger side valve cover gasket to button up a leak.
I am excited to offer this car to one of my clients, are you the favorite pair of jeans type of Porsche owner
