1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

Go ahead; read every buyers' guide for air-cooled Porsches and the car they all tell you to buy is the 1987-1989 3.2 Carrera. Why? There are a myriad of reasons, too many to expound upon here, but suffice it to say the have the classic Porsche “aesthetic”, they are mechanically bulletproof and they make a solid investment.

The challenge is that these cars are now 25 years old, and so finding a nice, unmolested and correctly maintained example can be a challenge. That is what makes this car so desirable.

Here is this car's story:  The particular Carrera was sold brand new at Bayside Porsche in Everett Washington on November 24th, 1987, and it has never left weather ideal Western Washington. Why do I say Western Washington is weather ideal? We don’t have any severe winter weather and so as a result there is no corrosion damage caused by exposure to road salt that you will see on cars from the East Coast and upper Mid-West. The West Side also doesn’t get the high heat and intense sun that the South and Southwest receive, which bakes rubber seals, trim, headliners, leather and cracks dashes. It’s the perfect car preservation climate. Take a look at the photos and you will see what I am talking about!

The original owner had the car until 1997 and put just over 47k miles on the car. The second owner purchased the car on July 2nd, 1997 and has been the car's loving custodian for the past 16 years. Current mileage is just over 71k. The wonderful thing about both owners is that they kept the full history so one can see the careful attention the car received. The most recent owner is a CPA and, as such, was very methodical about maintaining the car per a schedule as well as keeping all the documentation. For the past 16 years, it has only been serviced by one guy, Squire Tomasie of Squire’s Autowerkes in Bellevue, WA. Squire is a well-known old-school Porsche guy who knows these cars inside and out, one drive and you will know it has had the best of care.

I am happy to review the history with any interested buyer, but the important points are that the car received every service interval by the book from birth to current, never missing a service interval. Any issue that surfaced was rectified immediately. The motor is bone dry, no leaks of any kind, and has never had a significant issue, nor been apart.

The body and paint are incredibly straight and clean; it is a truly impressive example in that respect. I am a fanatic for original paint and I am thrilled to tell you that the car is wearing all original paint with exception of some paintwork on the left rear quarter panel. This is verified via a paint meter. The other wonderful thing is that all the body panels are original to this car as verified with the matching VIN tags on every panel--see the photos. Very, very nice!

The interior is likewise clean, no significant wear on the seats, door panels or dash. It has always been stored indoors, so no heavy sun exposure, moisture, etc. Everything works including all the gauges, lights, cruise control, windows, locks, mirrors, etc. The only exception is the AC engages, the fan operates, but it doesn’t blow cold. In order to prepare the car for sale the following items were addressed:

  • 4 new Continental Extreme Contact DW Tires, old tires were replaced due to age.

  • Minor service, oil and filter, inspection

  • New hood shocks front and rear

  • Full detail inside and out

The car comes complete with a full service history, books and manuals, 4 keys, the OEM air pump and a pristine toolkit. It drives like an absolute dream and the shift quality of the G50 transmission is outstanding. It, of course, has a clean title, is current on all service and is ready for its next new owner. Is that you?
