1981 Porsche 911 SC Coupe
If you are looking for an iconic Porsche, this car absolutely stands out! For a Porschephile I have the dream job, I get to inspect and drive some of the best Porsche’s on the planet! However, don’t kid yourself, for every gorgeous air-cooled 911 I buy there are probably 20 “sad” examples I pass on. Don’t forget these are 25-50 year old cars, so the range of quality is vast and mostly skewed towards the bottom end of the scale. Every so often a car will surprise me, this is that car…
Why does this car surprise me? Simply because it is truly an exceptional example of a 911SC, The body, paint, interior, drivetrain, originality and the way it drives just oozes correctness. I don’t know how else to describe it. To give you an idea I drove this car on a 1400 miles trip recently and enjoyed every mile! How many people would trust a 32 year old to do that? It didn’t even hiccup!
Here is the overview:
Exterior:
This car just simply pops out of the crowd both in photos and in person. The Grand Prix white paint is outstanding, with almost none of the wear you would expect given its 32 years of age. The paint is 100% original with exception of the driver’s door (as verified with a paint meter). The previous owner made some nice upgrades such as H4 headlights. 7&8-inch wheels as opposed to the OEM 6 & 7” , they so nicely fill the fender wells. The rear deck lid has a fiberglass ducktail, which looks so period, however if you prefer I have the original OEM decklid for the car. The ride height has been adjusted for just the right stance. Wow…
Interior:
This car was delivered from the factory in a deviated tan/chocolate full leather interior. The full leather is such a nice upgrade from the standard partial leather, its very rich and inviting. The interior shows almost none of the wear you would expect and everything is just how it should be. The only upgrades are a period correct set of cocoa mats and an OEM looking Blaupunkt head unit.
Mechanical:
This car runs and drives EXACTLY the way it is supposed to. If you are in the market for a 911SC you owe it to yourself to drive this car, it will give you a reference of what an exceptional SC drives like! The motor is bone dry, no leaks of any kind. EVERYTHING on the car works as designed, including the AC (as tested on my 1400 mile drive in 85+ degree temperatures!). The 915 shifts well and has an OEM short shift kit. I don’t know what else to say other than it is ready to go. The two things that floored me on this car were the fact that it has no wind leaks or squeaks of any kind and the air-conditioning blowing cold. I can’t tell you how rare those two items are…
Here are the recent service items current mileage is 80,100:
- 76,100- 4 new Bridgestone Potenza RE-760 tires
- 75,190- Major service- Adjust valves, new valve cover gaskets, plugs, Oil and filter, transmission fluid, brake fluid flush, brakes noted at 50% front and 75% rear
- 73,724- AC system serviced, updated Sanden style compressor
- 63,368- New clutch, new trans and engine mounts, new engine sound pad
Accessories:
No Porsche would be complete without all its assorted accessories. I have the following for the car:
- Service history for the past 15 years
- Original owners manual and case
- Original tool kit and jack (missing the correct tire pump)
- Fitted car cover
- Original decklid (original paint)
- Two keys
Overall if you are tired of looking at average SC’s, here is your car. It looks and drives absolutely outstanding and it would be a great addition to any Porschephile’s garage!
