True Porsche people can while away hours of time simply daydreaming about their dream new Porsche configuration. Admit it, you have spent hours that you should have been working utilizing the Porsche online new car configurator! It’s ok; this is a safe space….

Even better than simply spec’ing out your new Porsche, is the idea of picking it up at the factory in Stuttgart, putting it thru it’s paces on the Autobahn and driving thru idyllic, medieval European villages. The original owner of this 1986 Carrera Cabriolet lived that very dream as evidenced in an extraordinary treasure trove of photos, documentation and even a typewritten travel journal highlighting items down to the minutiae of what they ate during their 2-week stay! This trip and purchase was undertaken as a retirement present after 35 years in Corporate America.

Now fast-forward to 2018; why does that matter? It matters because this level of obsession and detail gives you some insight into the type of owner he was, he LOVED this car and now 32 years later it SHOWS! He was an instrument rated pilot and clearly took the pilots approach to insuring the vehicle was in “flight condition” at all times. Sadly he passed away in 2008 and the car was bequeathed to his son. His son had the car for the next 6 years, using it sparingly but ultimately realizing his Dad’s legacy was best turning the car over to a Porsche enthusiast. Luckily my customer found this car and brought it to Washington in 2015. The car is remarkable…

The car was ordered with the following specification:

  • Guards Red Exterior
  • Black Partial Leather interior
  • 16” Forged Alloy Wheels
  • Cruise Control
  • Blaupunkt Monterey Radio
  • European Delivery

The car was picked up at the factory on June 2nd1986 and shipped home on the vessel “Frisia” arriving at the Port in Houston on August 9th1986. The original owner maintained the car until his death and approximately 101k of the current 103k miles. The maintenance and care the car received is well documented with an unbroken chain of service history from new.

In preparation for sale, I felt the car deserved to be truly world class, so here are the items I did to make a great car exceptional:

  • Brand new correct top and headliner- the original was just showing evidence of age and its now PERFECT!
  • An inspection revealed some oil leaks, so the engine was removed and the following leaks were addressed: left and right timing chain covers, main shaft seal, cam thrust plate seals. We also changed the oil and filter and air filter.
  • 4 new Continental Extreme Contact tires- the previous tires were like new but older so I wanted it RIGHT!
  • Complete Detail by Metropolitan Detail- (metropolitandetail.com)

The condition of this car exterior, interior and mechanically is truly impressive. I would encourage anyone to come see it in person. About the only thing I know that could stand improvement are the shocks, in a dumb move Porsche specified Boge shocks as the standard and now 32 years later these sub-par shocks should be replaced. Frankly I didn’t do it as they are the original and correct ones, but I think a set of Bilsteins would do wonders!

This car would be ideal for Porsche Club of America (PCA) preservation class as the car is 100% original with just 2 very small exceptions: an Ungo box alarm installed when new (remember those?) and the hood was refinished early in the cars life to remedy some road wear. That’s it! The rest of the car is wearing all original paint (as verified with a paint meter), the interior is 100% original and the car is matching numbers.

The car comes complete with the following items:

  • Full History from order, window sticker, European delivery, photos of the car at the factory(!), complete service history.
  • All books and manuals
  • All original keys, including the correct leather key pouch
  • Show quality original tool kit, air pump, 1stAid Kit, safety triangle, plastic gloves, tire storage bag, tonneau cover and storage bag.
  • Car cover

In summary, if you are looking for a stunning example of a 3.2 Carrera, with a full and known history that was clearly loved, this IS your car! If you want a more budget friendly choice, you could certainly spend less but you would NEVER find one like this one on a budget….
