About this Car
Ssshhh… don’t tell anyone BUT here is a Porsche hack…. The level of fun one derives from driving and owning a Porsche is not equivalent to the amount you spend on one… Yes, that is quite a foolish thing for me to tell my customers, being as though my average transaction is well into the 6-figures, but people buy from me because they know that I tell it to them straight.
Straight truth: a 914 is an INSANELY fun car to own and drive. It’s also dead slow by today’s standards but is just so ridiculously charming to interact with that you can’t help but smile. It starts when you walk up to the car: it simply looks happy sitting still and doesn’t look like any other car on the road. Now hop in and you notice that your butt seems to be about 4″ off the pavement (note: it is!), the 380mm steering wheel falls right to hand and the iconic Porsche tachometer is dead in front of you. If you are smart, you have already removed the top, even better if its a cool but sunny day and the windows are up. Turn the key and due to Bosch Fuel Injection it starts right up. Slot the gearbox down and to the left and release the clutch. The motor revs easily and seemingly has no load behind it (well in fact, it doesn’t… a 914 has a sub 2,100lb curb weight) and next thing you know you are pushing forward to grab 2nd and the motor sounds like a finely tuned german sewing machine. Keep the revs up and find your first 90 degree corner, just for thrills literally hamfist the wheel into the turn and the car changes direction NOW… you expect it will do something but alas the car simply is now going 90 degrees the other direction. You try this over and over and is seems to bend the laws of physics… you giggle and even though you are still likely not exceeding the speed limit you feel like you are 12 years old, at the county fair driving a go-kart…. Ok, sure its not a 911, sure my neighbors mini-van is faster, but do you care?
Ok, so now that I have convinced you that a 914 is worthwhile endeavor, let me tell you about this specific example. This is that hard to find ALWAYS LOVED car. Go back 10-15 years ago and your typical driver quality 914 had sunk into the $2-5k used car bracket and they suffered serious indignities at the hands of less than stellar owners. So many suffered this misreable fate, that when you find a car that has been appreciated from new, you notice! This car has been PCA member owned since new and has a traceable history back to the first owner. It has been owned for the last several years by a longtime client of mine who IS the type of owner you want to buy from. He has invested almost $30k in the past 5 years, just making sure the car got what it needed and he left it better than he found it. Sure, someone could say that doesn’t make fiscal sense, but it makes emotional sense because when we love something we take care of it. If I have any piece of advice for someone shopping for a 914, find one that has been LOVED!
The body and paint on this car are quite nice, riding that delicate line between nice enough to be given front row parking privledges at an event, but not so dear that the drive afterwards is stressful. The current owner had the hood headlight covers and windshield surround refinished at Eurotech, the rest of the paint is original. Original windshield, amazing brightwork and other than the commonly added Porsche crest on the hood, its all original.
The interior is likewise mostly original and super crisp (is that the right word? I’m not sure but it just looks right…). I even LOVE the period Kenwood 2-knob am/fm cassette, I remember that from the Crutchfield catalog in the late 80’s…. Everything works as it should including the heat (so nice this time of year, top off, heat ON!) and one nice bonus on a 914 is quite roomy compared to the 911 of period.
Mechanically no expense has been spared, we did an engine out service with a 914 expert which included: full tune up, valve adjust, new clutch, resurface flywheel, new stainless fuel lines, new vent lines. We also repaired the trunk lid hinge which had failed and made a small repair to the hell hole area. All told $8,458 to get it up to speed.
The car comes complete with a full service history, books and manuals, Certificate of Authenticity, a litany of spare parts and more.
So, feel free to spend more money with me if you like… but I am hoping one of my customers will discover the 914 secret!
